If mercury fillings are so toxic, why doesn’t everyone who has them get sick?
Why doesn’t everyone with long-term, chronic illness heal quickly once triggers such as root canal teeth or cavitations are removed or treated? Why do some people not heal at all – or even get sicker?
Maybe you’ve wondered about these things. Maybe you’ve heard people use them to dismiss health concerns about amalgam and focal infections. But cases like these don’t prove our concerns overblown. Rather, they confirm that the human body is a much more complex and dynamic organism than much of mainstream medicine makes it out to be. As a fascinating article in Wired illustrated late last year, one of the main limitations of the dominant medical approach is that it’s often based on simplistic notions of cause and effect that don’t reflect reality.
One of the real miracles of your body is that it’s designed as a self-regulating organism. It has mechanisms for maintaining its health, healing from injury and fending off microbial and toxic invaders. By taking care of your body – through good nutrition, exercise and the like – you support its ability to self-regulate.
But self-regulation can also be impaired – say, when the body is overwhelmed by toxins, or when chemical or energetic pollutants cause physical damage. Such conditions make it harder for cells to communicate effectively and efficiently with each other. The body tries restore order, which we often experience as “symptoms” – signs that it is trying to heal.
The typical current medical approach is to lessen those symptoms with drugs or surgery. This can bring great relief, but it does nothing to address their cause. More effective is an approach that supports the body’s inherent ability to heal, and this is the foundation of biological dental medicine.
You know the parable Jesus told about the sower?
A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold.
Though the point of this story is to convey a spiritual truth, there’s literal truth, as well: the growth and health of the seed depend on the quality of soil. So, too, the health of the body, which is governed by the biological terrain. You may also hear it referred to as the intracellular matrix (“intracellular” means “existing between cells”), ground system or milieu. All of these words refer to the same thing: your body’s internal environment. And just as soil quality dictates the health of what grows in it, the biological terrain ultimately determines your health.
If the terrain is polluted or tissues are damaged, no removal of dental toxins or foci is apt to bring long-term healing. The body becomes ever less capable of clearing the toxins or repairing damage. (A great source for learning more about this dynamic is How Illness Happens by biological dentist Dr. Gary Verigin, which you can download here.)
Thus, we do not just go in and remove amalgam fillings or scrape out cavitations or extract infected root canal teeth without three things happening first:
- Testing to determine all physical and energetic burdens contributing to a patient’s compromised health, including dental burdens
- Testing of dental materials for biocompatibility (for we don’t want to replace one source of toxins with another)
- A pre-dental treatment phase to open the channels of elimination and prepare the body for healing (often through a combination of nutritional changes and homeopathic remedies)
We are blessed to be able to work with multiple, like-minded MDs, chiropractors, naturopaths, applied kinesiologists and others for both this pre-treatment process and post-treatment detoxification and support, including naturopathic physician Dr. Dawn Ewing. Using advanced diagnostic tools such as EAV (energetic screening), Biological Terrain Analysis (BTA) and thermography, “Dr. Dawn” is able to give us a better understanding of a patient’s health picture and how dental factors figure into it. She likewise develops and administers custom pre- and post-treatment protocols to nurture and sustain our patients’ healing. We’re grateful for her skill and expertise.
These aren’t extra steps but necessary ones. Assessing the state of and optimizing the terrain is the foundation for true healing.
